What the licence covers

Three things worth stating plainly.

One price, no feature tiers

Everything the application does is in the application you install. There is no professional edition and no feature held back for a higher plan.

Three Macs, or ten for a team

The licence counts Macs, not people: three on the standard licence, or ten on the team licence at $75 a year. You can release a Mac from the Freemius portal without needing access to it, which is the case that matters when a Mac is lost, sold or dead.

Thirty days, no card

The trial is the full application, except that migration and replication are scan-only. When it ends, browsing and downloading keep working.

Storage is separate

Your storage bill stays yours

Your Backblaze bill is between you and Backblaze. Bucketree neither resells storage nor takes a share of it, so the cost of using it is this licence plus whatever you already pay them, and the two are unrelated.

Bucketree reports what you are storing, which it can count exactly. The B2 API publishes no billing endpoint, so what you were charged stays between you and Backblaze.

The rest of the arrangement

Why a subscription

Several comparable Mac applications sell a one-time licence, and it is fair to ask why this one does not. The honest answer is that the recurring cost here is not a feature roadmap. It is keeping up with two things that move underneath the application: the Backblaze API, which gains capabilities and occasionally changes behaviour, and macOS, which breaks things once a year on a schedule.

A one-time price would be a bet that neither of those happens. It would make a better sales page and a worse product. If you would rather pay once, you can. $99 covers three Macs for this major version, which is about four years of the subscription, and the multiple is the same argument: the ground keeps moving for at least that long.

Cancelling and refunds

Cancel at any time from the Freemius customer portal. Cancelling stops the next annual renewal and does not shorten the year you have already paid for.
